About the Author

Dr. Howard Meyer is a Connecticut-based artist, poet, and writer who has dedicated nearly two decades to mastering Chinese brush painting. Originally from San Diego, Meyer maintains his practice from Soaring Dragon Studio, specializing in the Gong-bi (fine line) style.

Howard brush painting

Meyer's artistic journey began in 2004 when he enrolled in his first Chinese brush painting class. Working with traditional materials—animal-hair brushes, ink sticks, and Xuan paper—he discovered passion for this ancient art form. His development was shaped by his mentor, Master Shantien Tom Chow, with whom he formed a deep friendship. Meyer later curated exhibitions of Chow's artwork at the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum.

Specializing in flower and bird paintings, Meyer employs the Gong-bi technique, which demands exceptional control through minute brush strokes. His artistic philosophy extends beyond aesthetics; he seeks to connect with nature through depth of color and emotion, finding enlightenment and harmony through practice.

Through nearly two decades of practice, Meyer continues refining his craft, viewing his journey as endless learning. His work bridges traditional Chinese techniques and contemporary Western appreciation, translating ancient methods into expressions that resonate with modern audiences while maintaining the spiritual essence of Chinese brush painting.
